Vienna, July 2, 2026
June 2026 in Austria has become only the fourth-warmest June in measurement history despite a two-week heat wave with temperatures up to 40.1 degrees, as GeoSphere Austria announced on Thursday.
One of the most extreme heat waves in measurement history
Two weeks of sweating, peak values of more than 40 degrees in the lowlands, and then severe storms sweeping across the country: Especially the second half of June 2026 will likely be remembered for a long time in Austria. GeoSphere Austria, the state weather and climate service, described the heat wave on Thursday as "one of the most extreme in the country's measurement history."
"In the second half of the month, Austria experienced one of the most extreme heat waves in the measurement history of the country. Comparable heat waves had previously only occurred in the months of July or August, but for a June, new standards were set," climatologist Alexander Orlik of GeoSphere Austria summarized.
