Tropical Night in Austria: Meteorologists Record Historic Readings, Hospitals Ramp Up for Heat

The highest minimum temperatures were recorded in Vienna-Stammersdorf at 24.4 degrees, in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg at 24.1 degrees, and in Langenlebarn at 24.0 degrees. At several measuring stations, temperatures also failed to drop below 23 degrees. These readings thus join the series of warm summer nights that Geosphere Austria had recorded in recent weeks.

Meteorologist Jessica Spengler from the weather service Ubimet explained the connection between drought and heat stress. „Bei normaler Feuchte und grünem Gras würde viel Wärmeenergie beim Übergang verpuffen. Jetzt geht die Energie in die Luftmassen zurück." The absence of vegetation as a cooling factor means the heat remains trapped in the lower atmosphere.

Why the Nights Stay So Warm

The ongoing drought amplifies this effect further. Soils that have seen little rainfall over months can evaporate less water, resulting in less evaporative cooling. The consequence is higher overnight minimum temperatures, which in densely built urban areas like Vienna barely drop any further.

Hospitals and Care Facilities Prepare

Nationwide, the government is preparing for further heat stress. The Ministry of Health and Gesundheit Österreich GmbH (GÖG) are advancing initiatives to make hospitals and care facilities climate-fit. Structural measures are planned, as well as training for staff, so that vulnerable groups are better protected during heatwaves.

The current readings are part of a broader summer heatwave that has gripped large parts of Central Europe for days. In Vienna itself, Geosphere Austria had also recorded record values for overnight minimum temperatures the previous week. The course of this summer fits into a series of warm years that meteorologists attribute to advancing climate change.

Experts point out that tropical nights put greater strain on health than hot days alone, because the cardiovascular system and sleep recover less. The risk of complications rises for older people and the chronically ill. The World Health Organization therefore recommends targeted heat protection plans in healthcare facilities, an approach also being pursued in Austria.

For the coming days, meteorologists expect temperatures to remain high, with the probability of a new record tropical night considered elevated, particularly in Vienna and the eastern lowlands. Geosphere Austria plans to further densify its measurement series to document the development of nighttime heat more precisely.

The ongoing measures in the healthcare sector are to be anchored in the medium term. These include heat protection plans for hospitals, climate-related upgrades to buildings, and training for nursing staff. The goal is to ensure that, even during further tropical nights, care for sensitive patient groups remains secured.
