In the round of 16 of the soccer World Cup in North America, England defeated the Democratic Republic of Congo 2:1 (0:1) on Wednesday in Atlanta. In front of 68,239 spectators at the Atlanta Stadium, Brian Cipenga scored the surprising opener for the underdog in the 7th minute, before Harry Kane turned the game around with a brace.
Cipenga's opener as wake-up call
Captain Chancel Mbemba played a high ball into the box, Djed Spence couldn't get his head on it, and Cipenga fired the ball low into the back of the net for the 1:0, with goalkeeper Pickford not looking good. The 28-year-old, who plays in the Spanish second division, stayed cool in front of goal and scored his very first international goal. The subsequent somersault by the surprise goalscorer was also a sight to behold.
