King Harald V of Norway has died: Mourning across the country

Harald V was regarded in Norway as a down-to-earth king without pretensions. Unlike many European monarchs, he regularly engaged with ordinary people, spoke openly about the simple things in life, and traveled the country without elaborate court ceremony. This closeness to the everyday lives of citizens made him popular beyond his country's borders. His approval ratings remained at record highs for a long time.

The deceased was born in 1937 as the son of King Olav V and the Danish-Norwegian Crown Princess Märtha. During the German occupation of Norway in World War II, the family fled into exile with him as an infant. After the war, the family returned. Harald V underwent military training, studied in Oxford among other places, and in 1968 married Sonja Haraldsen, a commoner — a sensation at the time, as a marriage to a commoner threw the court into a minor crisis.

As heir to the throne, Harald V had to assume the crown in an uncertain period after the death of his father in 1991. Economically, the country was then facing a downturn in the oil industry; politically, Norway was searching for its place after the end of the Cold War. During his 33-year reign, he guided the royal house through several crises, including the death of Haakon Magnus' first son, an illegitimate child, and the affair surrounding Marius Borg Høiby, a stepson of the king.

Immediately after news of his death broke, hundreds of mourners spontaneously gathered before the Royal Palace in Oslo, laying down flowers and lighting candles. Condolence books were also opened at Norwegian embassies abroad, including in Berlin, Stockholm, and Copenhagen. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre paid tribute to the king as a constant in Norwegian civic life. «Wir haben einen König verloren, der seinem Land mit ganzem Herzen diente», Støre declared.

Condolences Far Beyond Norway

Official funeral arrangements are being prepared over the coming days. According to Norwegian protocol, a memorial service is initially planned at Oslo Cathedral, to be attended by the heads of government, representatives of the Storting, and invited foreign heads of state. Royal families from Denmark, Sweden, and Great Britain are also expected. Prior to the interment, the body is to lie in state for several days in the chapel hall of the Royal Palace, as is customary.

International reactions followed swiftly. King Charles III sent a telegram of condolence to the Norwegian royal family, paying tribute to the close ties between the British and Norwegian royal houses, which date back to King Haakon VIII. The Swedish royal couple and Danish Queen Margrethe II also expressed their condolences. In Brussels, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that with Harald V, the European Union was losing an «ehrlichen Freund».

In Norway, the news triggered a broad wave of mourning that extended far beyond supporters of the monarchy. Even critics of the monarchy expressed respect for the deceased's human warmth and sense of duty. Social scientists pointed out that the popularity of the royal house over recent decades had been closely tied to the person of Harald V. His death could therefore revive the debate about the future of the monarchy in Norway.

With the accession of Crown Prince Haakon, the question of the royal family's image is also coming to the fore. In Norwegian media, there had been repeated reporting in recent years about the lifestyle of Marius Borg Høiby, the eldest son of Mette-Marit, who had been in conflict with the law on multiple occasions. The future King Haakon X and Crown Princess Mette-Marit had issued statements standing with the victims. Observers see an opportunity for a fresh start in the coming reign.
