A King in His Own Words and in the Hearts of His People
The Norwegian royal family and the government have announced the death of King Harald V. The king passed away peacefully on Friday morning at the Royal Palace in Oslo, according to an initial statement. For weeks prior, there had been speculation about his state of health. Harald V had been King of Norway since 1991 and was married to the born Crown Princess Sonja.
With the monarch's death, Crown Prince Haakon, the eldest son of Harald and Sonja, will succeed to the throne. Crown Prince Haakon, who according to Norwegian tradition will henceforth go by King Haakon X, had in recent years increasingly prepared to take on royal duties. At his side is his wife, Crown Princess Mette-Marit. The couple has two children together; Mette-Marit is also the mother of a son from a previous relationship.
