Mette-Marit received the coffin of the late King Harald V in Oslo on Monday. It was her first official engagement as the new Queen of Norway, as reported by the news programme Bayern 2 on 30 August 2026. In doing so, the widow of the deceased monarch visibly steps into the role previously held by her husband.
Following the solemn ceremony, Mette-Marit accompanied the procession to the royal residence in Oslo. There, the body of Harald V will lie in state so that the public can pay their final respects. Like other European monarchies, Norway provides for a multi-day mourning ceremony before the funeral takes place.
