Belfast, 10 June 2026
A knife attack on a man in North Belfast late on Monday evening triggered severe xenophobic riots in the Northern Irish capital, during which hundreds of people fought street battles with security forces, set buses and residential buildings on fire, and police ordered the deployment of armored vehicles.
The crime and its consequences
The unrest was triggered by a knife attack that occurred late Monday evening in the north of Belfast. A Sudanese man who had entered the country as an asylum seeker brutally stabbed a man in Belfast. A man in his forties suffered serious eye injuries as well as deep cuts to his head, neck, and back and was in life-threatening condition according to investigators. A kitchen knife was recovered at the scene.
On Tuesday evening, prosecutors filed charges against the alleged perpetrator. He is a 30-year-old Sudanese national. He is charged with attempted murder, carrying a bladed weapon in public, and making death threats. He is scheduled to appear before a magistrate in Belfast on Wednesday. According to police, the man had most recently been living in Belfast. He had entered Northern Ireland by bus from Dublin in February 2023, after previously flying to Ireland from Paris. In September 2023, his asylum application was approved, granting him the right to remain in the United Kingdom.
