Knife attack Regensburg: 20-year-old in pre-trial detention

The accused had already come to police attention before the crime. As the investigations revealed, the city of Regensburg imposed a weapons possession ban on him in 2023 after he was found with a knife and an electroshock device during two checks. Less than 24 hours before the crime, the man was also in police custody, according to the information.

Prior convictions and weapons possession ban

After the crime, a large-scale operation involving emergency forces lasting several hours unfolded on Wednesday. At peak, around 370 officers were deployed, including special forces. Two additional bank employees were evacuated from the branch "without contact with the perpetrator" as part of the operation before special forces could move in.

The special forces detained the 20-year-old after about three hours "without resistance" in the area of a toilet inside the bank. No one was injured in the operation, according to the investigators. Customers present and a married couple present also remained uninjured, according to the information.

Major operation with 370 officers

The investigators secured evidence at the crime scene and questioned witnesses, including the customer couple present and the other bank employees. The Regensburg Criminal Police Inspection took over the investigations, and the Regensburg Public Prosecutor's Office is conducting the proceedings. Criminal Director Robert Fuchs appeared before the press as spokesperson for the investigating authorities.

Investigations and legal assessment

For the investigators, the question of motive is now the focus. Indications of a political or extremist motive for the crime were not initially made public. The exact origin of the kitchen knife used and possible accomplices are also the subject of further investigations.

The city of Regensburg is under the impression of the incident. The mayor and city leadership expressed their dismay at the crime. The bank branch remained closed on Thursday, and a crisis intervention team was deployed for employees and witnesses.

In addition to murder, the accused is also charged with aggravated robbery extortion. Should the suspicion of murder be confirmed, the 20-year-old faces a life sentence. Pre-trial detention was ordered, among other things, due to flight risk and risk of obstruction.

Investigators are also examining whether there were concrete indications of a planned crime before the act and whether existing protective measures – in particular the weapons possession ban imposed in 2023 – could have prevented the incident. Findings on this were not initially published.

Reactions from the city

An initial evaluation of the video recordings from the bank branch strengthened the suspicion that the accused acted alone, according to the investigators. Questioning of the married couple present and the other bank employees continued on Thursday.

The criminal police set up a telephone hotline for witnesses and asked the public for information on possible preparatory acts. Residents reported a large deployment of police vehicles and a helicopter over the city area.

The public prosecutor's office announced that the case would be processed swiftly and with high priority. Should the accused have been limited in his criminal responsibility at the time of the crime, a psychiatric expert opinion would be obtained, according to investigator circles.

The regional and national media coverage triggered a wave of concern. Politicians from all parties represented in the Bundestag condemned the act and called for a thorough investigation. Churches and religious communities in Regensburg invited people to prayer services mourning the victim.
