Koeman resigns as Netherlands coach after penalty shootout elimination against Morocco

The night of the resignation

Koeman publicly took responsibility for the result, speaking of a World Cup in which the Dutch national team aimed to make history. "Wir alle haben von einer Weltmeisterschaft geträumt, bei der wir Geschichte schreiben würden" is the key passage of his message, in which the coach added that he is "vor allem stolz und dankbar" retracing his career, which saw him manage clubs such as Ajax, PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona and the national team itself in two distinct cycles. The match against Morocco had ended 1-1 after the one hundred and twenty regular minutes, with Cody Gakpo putting the Netherlands ahead in the 72nd minute. The North Africans' equalizer came in stoppage time, in the 90'+1, thanks to a goal from Issa Diop that had reset the balance of the match. The tension then moved to the penalty shootout, where the Dutch national team lost 3-4, missing three of their spot kicks with Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber and Crysencio Summerville, while Ismael Saibari scored the decisive one for Morocco. For the Netherlands, it is the third elimination from a World Cup specifically on penalties, after those in 2014 and 2022.

Towards the end of the match there was also an unlucky episode that further complicated the Dutch plans: goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, the protagonist of an otherwise positive performance for one hundred and twenty minutes, had initially saved the second Moroccan penalty taken by Soufiane Rahimi, only to deflect the ball with his heel into his own net, gifting the opponents a temporary lead. An error that, together with the three missed spot kicks, helped define the fate of the evening.

At the end of the match, the mood in the Dutch locker room was extremely heavy. When asked whether he had offered his resignation to the federation, Koeman was categorical: "Das habe ich nicht getan", he replied after the final 3-4 on penalties. The coach, however, clarified that he wanted to calmly reflect on his future, as he had already stated immediately after the match in Monterrey. "Ich werde in Ruhe über meine Zukunft nachdenken", he had said on Monday evening, before reaching the definitive decision in the following hours. His contract with the Dutch federation was set to expire on July 31, 2026.

Personal reasons

In his farewell, the head coach invoked the responsibility of the role: "Als Cheftrainer trägt man die Verantwortung", he wrote, adding that the decision was not easy "Gerade, weil ich so lange und intensiv mit diesem Trainerstab und dieser Gruppe von Spielern zusammengearbeitet habe". The federation, for its part, thanked Koeman for the "unbestreitbaren Fortschritt" of the team, defining him as "unser erfolgreichster Nationaltrainer" who after seven years has chosen to end his experience at the helm of the Oranje.

Personal and family reasons are also said to have weighed on the coach's choice. In his farewell message, Koeman in fact cited his wife's illness, who has always supported and encouraged him: "Wenn jemand, den man von ganzem Herzen liebt, einen schweren Kampf ausfechtet, verändert sich die eigene Perspektive", he wrote, adding "Fußball war mein Leben, aber Gesundheit ist unbezahlbar" and thanking his partner: "Dafür bin ich ihr dankbarer, als ich es jemals in Worte fassen könnte".

A career of highs and lows

The former head coach retraced the main stages of his career: "Ich hatte das Privileg, für Vitesse Arnhem, Ajax Amsterdam, Benfica Lissabon, PSV Eindhoven, Valencia, AZ Alkmaar, Feyenoord Rotterdam, Southampton, Everton, den FC Barcelona und natürlich zweimal für Oranje zu arbeiten". A journey that closes with the bitterness of a premature elimination, summed up in the sentence "Genau deshalb schmerzt es, dass meine Zeit bei Oranje so endet", and with the awareness of a technical project that did not reach the goal of the final semester.

The Netherlands had arrived at the 2026 World Cup with significant ambitions: the minimum target set by the federation was the semifinal, a milestone already achieved under Koeman's guidance at Euro 2024, when the Oranje reached the final four of the continent, just as happened on the occasion of the 1988 continental title. The outgoing head coach had taken charge of the team at the beginning of 2023, succeeding Louis van Gaal, after a first experience on the national bench from 2018 to 2020.

On the fans' front, the elimination also had an unpleasant aftermath: the three Dutch penalty takers who missed from the spot were targeted by racist and hate-filled messages on their social media profiles. The Dutch federation confirmed the episode to "De Telegraaf", stressing the gravity of what happened and the need to protect its players. A spokesperson for the newspaper defined the matter simply as "entsetzlich", reiterating closeness to the players.

The future of the bench

On the opposite front, Morocco instead continued its run in the tournament, confirming the positive moment for North African football. Coach Mohamed Ouahbi spoke of a performance in which his team proved it could not be stopped: "Wir sind nicht zu stoppen, wenn wir den Fußball spielen, den wir spielen können". After the fourth place in 2022 in Qatar, the "Lions of the Atlas" thus put themselves forward for a leading role also in this edition, as demonstrated by the clean run that led to the elimination of the Netherlands.

The Koeman affair thus marks a new chapter in the troubled recent history of the Oranje, grappling with another high-profile farewell after that of his predecessor Van Gaal. The Dutch federation will now have to identify quickly a new head coach capable of guiding the reconstruction ahead of the upcoming international appointments, while reflection remains open on the tactical choices and on the internal dynamics of the group that led to one of the most painful eliminations of recent years.
