Lanxess posts slight gains in revenue and EBIT in the second quarter and confirms annual targets

The driver was once again the Specialty Additives segment, which manufactures specialty chemicals for the tire industry, lubricant and plastic additives, as well as flame retardants for the electronics industry and building insulation. There, operating result shot up by roughly a third year-on-year. The segment has been one of Lanxess's highest-margin business areas for years and, according to the company, benefits from persistently high demand for high-performance additives.

Prices for many base chemicals rose significantly as a result of these developments. Lanxess benefited from its broad positioning along the value chain and its focus on high-margin specialties rather than on the bulk business. In recent years, the group has made several portfolio adjustments to reduce its dependence on cyclical basic chemicals businesses.

Annual forecast confirmed despite mixed industry environment

Despite the positive quarterly development, the macroeconomic framework conditions remain tense. According to the company, demand from key customer industries such as automotive, electronics, and construction developed unevenly. While demand for flame retardants for building insulation and for additives for tire manufacturing remained robust, other parts of the portfolio were more subdued.

Lanxess CEO Matthias Zachert reiterated the annual targets that had already been updated at the end of July. Accordingly, the group continues to expect EBITDA pre exceptionals within a range that the company had specified on 31 July 2026. The group did not name the exact corridor in the statement but referred to the range communicated in summer. The Management Board also held to the most recently stated expectations for free cash flow and the Net Debt/EBITDA leverage ratio.

The outlook remains subject to further economic developments, particularly in Asia and Europe. Lanxess operates a significant portion of its plants in China and India and observes both industrial demand and competitive intensity there. Should the macroeconomic environment deteriorate, the Management Board reserves the right to adjust the forecast.

Stock market and analysts respond cautiously

The markets received the figures cautiously. News agencies such as dpa-AFX and research houses such as Jefferies assessed the quarter as in line with expectations but also pointed to the confirmed annual targets as the most important driver for the share price. For the coming quarters, observers continue to expect the group to be heavily dependent on developments in the Specialty Additives segment.

The group, headquartered in Cologne, employs several thousand people worldwide and is one of the largest specialty chemicals companies in Europe. By confirming its annual targets, the Management Board signals confidence in continuing the operational turnaround despite the existing economic risks.

Looking at the full year, profitability remains the central issue. The margin increase in Specialty Additives is considered the most important lever for achieving the medium-term return targets. Should the segment be able to maintain its high level, the Management Board sees the basis for a sustained recovery compared with the prior year as given.
