Frankfurt, June 30, 2026

The largest emergency shelter for homeless people in a Frankfurt subway station, located at Eschenheimer Tor, was cleared immediately on the order of the Frankfurt transport company (VGF) after a new fire protection assessment identified a danger to life and health.

The Frankfurt transport company (VGF) had terminated the lease for the B-level of the Eschenheimer Tor subway station effective September 30. As the VGF announced, the fire protection assessment had already been available since the end of May, leaving the city only little time to find an alternative. Since neither technical nor organizational measures could have eliminated the identified risks, immediate clearance had been necessary, the transport company stated.
