East Rutherford, 09 June 2026

Two days before the opening match of the 2026 World Cup, French football icon Michel Platini filed a lawsuit in France against FIFA President Gianni Infantino and five other officials, as multiple media outlets have reported in agreement.

Background: Platini's Failed Rise

According to consistent reports, the lawsuit is directed against FIFA chief Gianni Infantino, among others. He is accused of conspiracy ("Verschwörung") according to the plaintiffs. Michel Platini, who turns 70 in June, claims he has been unjustly excluded from top-level football for more than a decade. In his view, there was a conspiracy to prevent his election as FIFA President more than ten years ago. Instead of the French football legend, it was Infantino who rose to lead world football at the time. Platini had previously been seen as the likely successor to then-FIFA President Sepp Blatter.
