Lebanon has handed over Syrian ex-general Adel Issa to the Syrian authorities in Damascus, after a Viennese court had extradited the former Syrian officer to Beirut.
The handover took place on Tuesday at Rafik Hariri Airport in Beirut, as reported by the Lebanese news agency NNA, citing a security source. According to this, Syrian embassy staff urged the Lebanese authorities to arrest Issa after they learned of an arrest warrant from Damascus for "murder offenses and crimes against humanity during his time in the Syrian army." The crimes are said to relate to his time in the Syrian army.
Issa had previously been arrested in Vienna after a Lebanese-Syrian lawyer filed a lawsuit against him. The Vienna Regional Criminal Court then decided to extradite the Syrian to Lebanon. The exact timing of the Viennese decision and the date of the transfer from Austria to Lebanon were initially unclear.
