Vienna, June 01, 2026
The trial against former Brigadier General Khaled Al Halabi and another former representative of the Syrian Assad regime, accused of torture and other severe crimes against 21 civilians imprisoned in Syria, began on Monday at the Vienna Regional Court.
The main defendant, ex-Brigadier General Khaled Al Halabi, was led into the courtroom in handcuffs by several officers shortly before 9:30 a.m. He has been in pre-trial detention at the Josefstadt correctional facility since December 2024. The second defendant, Mussab A., is at liberty and refused to testify in court.
The public prosecutor's office accuses Al Halabi of being responsible for severe mistreatment of civilians as head of Department 335 of the Syrian secret service in Raqqa – from the outbreak of the civil war in 2011 until his flight in 2013. Mussab A. is alleged to have been responsible for interrogations as the former head of the criminal police in Raqqa until 2012.
