Klagenfurt, June 28, 2026

The author Lena Schätte won the Ingeborg-Bachmann Prize 2026 on Sunday midday in Klagenfurt, thus prevailing against 13 competitors at the 50th edition of the Days of German-Language Literature.

Schätte received the award, which is endowed with a total of 30,000 euros, for her text "Was wir tragen," as the jury announced on Sunday. The prize was awarded in Klagenfurt, Austria, the traditional venue of the competition. A seven-member jury decided on the award.

In his laudatory speech, the inviting juror Thomas Strässle paid tribute to the literary language of the text. In its "Schönheit und Schlichtheit" this literary language is "unübertrefflich," Strässle said. He described the text as "von existenzieller Wucht, wichtig und gewichtig, literarisch bedeutend" and praised Schätte for a "stupende Unsentimentalität." The text is "so stark und so bezwingend, dass er es nie nötig hat, anklagend und belehrend zu werden."
