Birmingham, 16 August 2026
Swiss javelin thrower Leonie Hügli was eliminated in the final of the women's competition at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, and the Swiss mixed relay, with the lineup of Hügli, Fabienne Hoenke, Dany Brand, and Daryl Bachmann, finished in 4th place.
The competition from a Swiss perspective
The competition in Birmingham was disappointing for the Swiss team. Leonie Hügli, who had started as a hopeful for an individual medal, did not manage to advance to the final of the best javelin throwers. She thereby missed not only the chance for an individual medal, but also the momentum she could have taken into the concluding mixed competition.
In the mixed relay with Hoenke, Brand, and Bachmann, the team ended up in 4th place. The relay, which combines the disciplines of sprinting and javelin throwing, is regarded as a prestigious conclusion to every European Athletics Championships. The podium remained out of reach for Switzerland.
