The Principality of Liechtenstein is opening its succession to daughters of the Princely House, ending a centuries-old practice of favouring male descendants.

Amendment to the House Law

The provision stipulates that, from the relevant cut-off date, female members of the Princely House will hold the same rank in the order of succession as their male relatives. In doing so, the Princely Family is responding to a broad societal debate that had gathered intensity in recent years.

At the centre of the amendment is a provision of the House Law of the Princely House of Liechtenstein, which had previously aligned the order of succession exclusively along the male line. With the revision, the eldest child of the reigning Prince will henceforth be successor regardless of gender.
