The Hereditary Prince of Liechtenstein has vetoed the Landtag's vote on the decriminalization of abortion, meaning the measure will not be implemented in the principality for the time being.
Background to the debate
The conflict over abortion legislation in Liechtenstein has escalated after the Hereditary Prince vetoed the corresponding parliamentary decision. Termination of pregnancy therefore remains punishable in the principality, even though the Landtag had previously supported the measure by a narrow majority. The imposition of the veto means that the initiative passed by parliament will not enter into force.
In Liechtenstein, the Hereditary Prince can, under the constitution, veto resolutions of the Landtag provided an objection is raised. This power has now been used to block the planned amendment of the criminal provisions on abortion. The Landtag had previously approved a corresponding draft law intended to remove or ease the punishability of termination of pregnancy in certain circumstances.
