A 51-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday for the murder of an 82-year-old resident of a senior citizens' residence in Vienna-Döbling.
Psychiatric Assessment
The Vienna Regional Court found the defendant guilty on August 13, 2026, of having killed the woman on August 28, 2024, in her room at the senior citizens' residence. According to the indictment, the body was discovered one day later by care staff who found evidence of a homicide. The prosecution had argued for murder; the defense had argued for acquittal.
The psychiatric expert Peter Hofmann told the court that the man had been criminally responsible at the time of the offense but suffers from a combined personality disorder with narcissistic-manipulative traits and mild emotional instability. Hofmann literally described the convicted man as "Er ist ein gefährlicher Mensch". Given the diagnosed disorder, placement in an institution for mentally abnormal offenders could not be ruled out, the expert said.
