ISPRA researchers explained that the consequences of the extreme warming for marine ecosystems, biodiversity, and the climate system could only be assessed more precisely through long-term measurement series, extensive data, and years of research. Without such a data foundation, it remains unclear how the temperature will affect fish stocks, coral reefs, and the spread of non-native species.

The Italian government in Rome announced that it would intensify the monitoring of sea temperatures and, together with European partners, establish an early warning system for marine heatwaves. Environmental organizations simultaneously called for faster measures to protect endangered species and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which are regarded as a significant cause of the warming.

Scientists pointed out that the Mediterranean is warming faster than many other sea regions of the world. The combination of rising air temperatures, shallow water depth, and intense solar radiation amplifies the effect. The persistent high-pressure influence over Southern Europe in the summer of 2026 has also reduced the release of heat from the sea into the atmosphere.

Impact on Fisheries and Tourism

The record temperature is already having noticeable consequences for fisheries along the Ligurian coast. Reports from the ports between Genoa and La Spezia indicate that certain fish species are migrating to cooler waters, while warm-loving species such as the blue sailfish (Blaue Segelflossenfisch) are spreading more strongly. Local fishermen reported declining catch volumes for traditional species.

Tourist regions along the Ligurian Riviera, meanwhile, recorded rising visitor numbers, as bathers took advantage of the unusually warm water temperatures. Environmental organizations warned, however, that elevated water temperatures favor the proliferation of toxic algae and could impair water quality in bays and harbors.

Next Steps for Research

ISPRA intends to feed the measurement data into a European dataset in the coming months to enable comparisons with previous heatwaves. The authority emphasized that while a single measurement deserves attention, it only gains significance in the context of long-term trends. An initial report on the effects of the current heatwave on the Ligurian Sea is expected by the end of the year.
