The 21-year-old Czech Linda Noskova won the women's final at Wimbledon against her compatriot Karolina Muchova 6:2, 5:7, 6:3, claiming her first Grand Slam title.
The final on Saturday developed a tension that had long seemed unlikely. After a dominant first set, Noskova appeared headed for a quick victory, but she was not confirmed as the winner until 2 hours and 28 minutes had passed. At 5:2 in the second set, she held her first three match points, and at 5:3 and 5:4 one more each – but Muchova saved all five chances and forced a deciding set.
A final full of twists
From 2:5 down, Muchova made it 7:5, and the second set seemed to usher in a new match. Noskova lost five games in a row and came under mental pressure. „My hand literally froze in some moments. I couldn't move as quickly anymore," the winner later described. With cold water on her face and her eyes on the trophies at the edge of the court, she fought her way back into the match.
