Lisa Totzauer Announces Candidacy for ORF General Director Position

Totzauer’s candidacy is built on a transformative vision for the broadcaster. In her 2021 application, she proposed turning ORF from a "closed institution into an open platform," emphasizing transparency and public engagement. "Our internal independence is reflected in our outward objectivity," she wrote, stressing the need for trust through openness.

Her concept also included the creation of an "Info-Directorate," featuring separate editors-in-chief for TV, radio, and online—a unique proposal among ORF leadership candidates. She argued that the ORF brand must become "a seal of quality for truth, standards, and trustworthiness."

Political Landscape and Challenges

Totzauer’s previous bid for the General Director role in 2021 saw her secure five votes in the Stiftungsrat, with support from FPÖ representatives, NEOS, and one employee representative. However, Roland Weißmann ultimately secured the position. This time, she faces competition from Clemens Pig, CEO of APA, who is widely regarded as the favorite.

Despite the odds, Totzauer remains optimistic. "We can reform this house. We are not powerless," she told her colleagues, according to *Der Standard*. Her campaign focuses on modernizing ORF’s structure and reinforcing its role as a public service broadcaster in the digital age.

Upcoming Election

The election for ORF General Director will take place on June 11. While Totzauer’s extensive experience and innovative proposals make her a strong contender, the political dynamics within the Stiftungsrat could prove decisive. Her ability to rally support beyond her 2021 base will be critical in challenging Pig’s frontrunner status.
