Austria's public broadcaster ORF faces political tensions as parties clash over the selection process for its next director-general, with Markus Breitenecker officially announcing his candidacy.

Markus Breitenecker, former executive of German media group ProSiebenSat.1, announced his application for ORF's top position via a LinkedIn video, emphasizing his 30 years of media experience and digital transformation expertise.

The selection process has drawn criticism amid allegations of political interference, particularly from the governing ÖVP party which has reportedly signaled its preference for APA director Clemens Pig.

ORF's 35-member Foundation Council is constitutionally responsible for selecting the director-general, but critics argue the process lacks transparency after reports of informal agreements between political parties.
