Low Water: Water Levels on the Danube and Rhine Continue to Drop, Shipping Must Prepare for Restrictions

On the Middle Rhine, one of the most heavily used inland waterway sections in Europe, the situation is worsening. According to available forecasts, the level is expected to fall to 24 centimeters by the evening hours. For Wednesday evening, a value of only 21 centimeters is expected at Kaub, further reducing the room to maneuver for cargo ships and passenger vessels.

Impacts on the Danube

The effects are also being felt along the Danube. In Lower Austria, particularly in the Wachau, as well as at gauging stations in Carinthia, in the March area near Angern, and on Lake Constance, low water levels are being recorded. The Port of Vienna is also closely monitoring the development, as a low Danube level directly affects the ships' loading draft and thus the transportable cargo volume.

Shipping companies are responding to the falling levels by reducing drafts and partially adjusting schedules. Industry representatives point out that during extreme low water, the transportable cargo volume per ship drops significantly, impairing the economic viability of transports and potentially affecting upstream and downstream logistics chains.

Industry Reactions

Alexandro Rupp, spokesperson for an association mentioned in the reports, pointed to the need to adjust voyages to current water levels. The safety of shipping takes priority here, while at the same time it is being examined which deliveries could be handled via alternative routes or modes of transport.

Not only cargo shipping is affected. Passenger shipping on the Danube and Rhine must also restrict or adjust individual trips. In tourism regions such as the Wachau or on Lake Constance, which rely heavily on river cruises and excursion boats, this means immediate economic losses for shipping companies and associated businesses.

Outlook and Consequences

Meteorologists and hydrological services are closely monitoring further developments. Without substantial precipitation in the catchment areas, no significant easing is in sight in the short term. The long-term development depends largely on weather patterns in the coming weeks.

The persistent low-water situation highlights the vulnerability of inland shipping to climatic changes. Industry representatives are therefore calling for increased investment in adapting infrastructure, for example through more flexible berths, optimized lock controls, and better real-time data on water levels, in order to be able to respond more quickly to extreme water levels in the future.

For the coming days, the responsible authorities advise skippers to inform themselves about current water levels and nautical notices before departing. The further development will be continuously monitored, according to expert circles.
