Vienna, July 28, 2026

Persistent low water levels on the Danube have, as of July 28, 2026, significantly restricted navigation on the Austrian stretch of the river, forcing shipping companies to implement reduced schedules and reduced loading.

Restricted Schedule at DDSG Blue Danube

DDSG Blue Danube is currently offering only an "eingeschränkten" (restricted) schedule. With this measure, the company is responding to the fallen water levels, which no longer permit fully loaded vessels to navigate certain stretches. The measure affects both tourist routes and freight traffic on the river.

As an industry spokesperson explained, the so-called lightening measures are particularly noticeable: "Andererseits werden die Schiffe wegen des Niedrigwassers weniger stark beladen ('Leichtern')". Vessels must therefore leave cargo on board, reduce their draught, and avoid running aground. This has a direct impact on the volume transported, and consequently on the economic efficiency of each voyage.
