Graham Platner, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Maine, on Monday denied a published allegation that he sexually assaulted a former girlfriend in 2021 and said he was taking time to reflect on the "best path forward" for his campaign.

Politico reported on Monday that a former girlfriend of Platner alleged that in 2021 he entered her home in rural Maine while "deeply intoxicated" and forced her to have sex with her over her repeated objections. CNN separately reported that the woman accused Platner of entering her home without permission and raping her while intoxicated. Platner has denied the allegation. "These allegations are troubling, serious, and false. Any accusation of non-consensual behavior is categorically untrue," he said. He also told Maine Public Radio that any suggestion he had engaged in physically threatening behavior was "just not true."
