FSV Mainz 05 and Borussia Mönchengladbach reached the second round of the DFB-Pokal on Sunday with convincing victories, while Union Berlin was only able to book its place in the next round narrowly against a fifth-tier side.
In the first round of the DFB-Pokal, FSV Mainz 05 and Borussia Mönchengladbach celebrated clear wins on Sunday and qualified early for the second round. Both clubs dominated their respective ties and left little doubt about progression for long stretches. While Mainz and Gladbach handled their tasks with composure, Union Berlin had to endure a long, nervous afternoon against a lower-league opponent from the Oberliga.
Mainz delivered an offensively strong performance and took its chances consistently. The side was dominant from the outset and controlled proceedings for large parts of the contest. With the clear victory, the Rheinhessen underlined their ambitions of staying in the competition as long as possible.
