Meiningen, July 28, 2026

On Tuesday afternoon, a major fire broke out on the grounds of the Meiningen Steam Locomotive Works, which has spread to two halls and is tying up over 100 emergency personnel from several districts.

Initial Situation and Location of the Fire

According to police, the fire began in the afternoon in an old factory hall of the former Reichsbahn-Ausbesserungswerk (RAW) on the premises of the Meiningen Steam Locomotive Works. As the city reported, the flames subsequently spread to a second hall, so that two halls are now on fire.

According to emergency personnel, the entire hall complex is burning across an area of approximately 100 by 100 meters. Since the structure was already considered at risk of collapse before the fire and can only be fought from the outside, firefighting efforts are particularly difficult.
