The United Nations itself has so far not commented substantively on the background of the self-immolation. A spokesperson for Guterres merely pointed to the ongoing police operation and announced that the UN administration would support the authorities' investigation.

Reactions and Investigations

AFP cited eyewitnesses who reported that the man had displayed documents or banners referring to Tibet and the situation of the Uyghurs before his act. An official confirmation of these accounts has not yet been provided.

Human rights organizations such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International called for an independent investigation in the meantime. They pointed out that self-immolations as a form of protest occur repeatedly within the Tibetan community and are a sign of a desperate situation.

The Chinese embassy in Washington was asked for a statement by several media outlets but initially did not comment on the incident. The Chinese government had previously defended the law passed in March as a necessary step to strengthen national unity.
