A man set himself on fire on Wednesday in front of the UN headquarters in New York and died from his injuries, as a controversial law on national identity came into force in China.
According to the news agency AFP, the incident occurred on July 3, 2026, on the grounds in front of the UN headquarters in New York. A spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres told AFP that he was "bestürzt über den tragischen und schrecklichen Vorfall".
As confirmed by the New York Police Department, the man was a person who, according to pro-Tibet activists, acted out of protest-related political motives. The exact circumstances of the man's identity and origin are still being examined by the authorities.
After the self-immolation, the man was taken to a hospital with severe burns, where he died a short time later. The New York Police Department launched an investigation into the exact sequence of events.
