Mannheim's Mayor Christian Specht (CDU) has expressed that he was "maximally disappointed" about the closure of the traditional Eichbaum brewery, affecting around 240 employees.
Talks Since October
The news of the closure apparently reached the workforce on Monday unprepared. As Specht explained on Tuesday, the city administration has "been in talks with the management of the insolvent Eichbaum brewery since October, in order to ensure all possible options for the continuation of the traditional company." However, no solution was reached.
According to Specht, there had been a "negotiated offer" from the university hospital as part of the new Heidelberg-Mannheim clinic network to take over the brewery site. "There had been a 'negotiated offer' from the university hospital, which those responsible had not agreed to," said Specht. The creditors of the insolvent company had refused to approve the deal, it was said.
