María Corina Machado has returned to Venezuela and, according to her own statements, intends to actively help shape political change from within the country.

The opposition politician said in an interview with the “Wall Street Journal” conducted in September that the time for her return had now come. She said she did not want to steer the political process in Venezuela from abroad but to take an active part in it on site. “The time for my return has come,” Machado said in the interview.

After Machado expressed her desire to return in June, media reports said the US government considered this plan inappropriate. The US government was working closely with Rodríguez’s government. These statements refer to the request rejected in June and not to the return that has now taken place.
