Venezuelan opposition leader Machado refuses to participate in US-backed talks

The initiative had been welcomed by Washington—which claims to have removed former President Nicolás Maduro from office through a military operation in January—as an important step toward political reconciliation in Venezuela. However, Machado and González Urrutia criticized that neither the scope nor the individual decisions of the process had been disclosed.

„It is not our place to explain its scope and decisions", the statement reads, with reference to the organizers. „Those promoting it must inform the country of its objectives, its method, and its timeline", the opposition continued. With this, the opposition alliance is demanding full transparency about the structure and content of the talks.

Accusation of intransparency

Immediately after the disputed 2024 presidential election, Machado had defended González Urrutia's victory over Maduro. The election had been criticized as manipulated by international observers and the opposition; the official electoral authority, however, declared Maduro the winner.

With the announcement not to participate in the talks, the opposition is tightening its line toward the transitional government. Rodríguez had described the talks as an inclusive dialogue intended to involve all political actors in the country. The refusal of the most prominent opposition representative calls this format into question.

Reactions from Washington to Machado's move were initially unclear. The US government had repeatedly stressed in recent months that a broad political solution in Venezuela could only succeed with the participation of the opposition.
