The Thuringian Minister-President Mario Voigt is bidding for another term as state chairman of his party at the CDU state party conference in Eisenach.

Thuringian Minister-President Mario Voigt is standing again on Saturday in Eisenach as CDU state chairman. The state party conference of the Thuringian Union is thereby following the party's schedule of electing a new leadership in the regular cycle. Voigt has previously held the office and, since taking up his post in the State Chancellery, has combined it with governmental responsibility in Erfurt.

In his candidacy speech, Voigt openly addressed the debate over his doctoral title that has been simmering for months. He acknowledged before the delegates that he knew and took seriously the concerns of the grassroots. "Ich weiß, dass euch das beschäftigt", he said, according to the speech manuscript. The Minister-President described a personal dilemma: on the one hand, he wanted to defend his academic achievement; on the other, he was aware that political opponents were using the affair to attack him.

Doctoral title as a perennial issue

The dispute over the academic degree has weighed on the CDU in Thuringia for some time. After plagiarism allegations became known, Voigt had initiated a review and repeatedly stressed that he had written his work correctly. The university at which he obtained his doctorate is examining the matter. A final ruling is pending. As long as the review is ongoing, the question of the legitimacy of the title remains politically contested.

At the party conference, Voigt received support from within his own ranks. Several speakers pointed to his previous record as Minister-President and emphasised that the substantive work for Thuringia should not be overshadowed by the title affair. Delegates from the district chapters said after the speeches that they were confident about going into the upcoming state elections with Voigt. The mood in the hall was described by participants as united.

Shadow of the opposition

At the same time, the shadow of the AfD was palpable in the hall. In recent weeks, the opposition had repeatedly raised the title affair in the Thuringian state parliament and also called for personal consequences. In his speech, Voigt addressed this indirectly by defending the independence of his academic work against political appropriation. The CDU interprets the attacks as an attempt to weaken the government with a view to the next electoral term.

Alongside the personnel decision, programmatic resolutions were on the agenda. The delegates deliberated on a key motion on the economic development of the Free State, on strengthening rural areas and on securing energy supply. In his candidacy speech, Voigt had announced that he wanted to place these issues at the centre of the coming two years. According to the party, the key motion was adopted by a large majority.

Unity ahead of state election

For CDU Thuringia, the party conference comes at a time of heightened competitiveness. In past state elections, the party has lost votes in several eastern German states to the AfD and the BSW. In Thuringia, where the CDU provides the Minister-President in Voigt, the starting position is considered particularly sensitive. With the renewed confirmation of the state chair, the party wants to demonstrate unity and initiate election campaign mode.

The count of the delegates' votes was expected to be completed in the evening. Voigt was regarded in advance as the certain candidate, as no rival had declared. With his confirmation in office, he would lead the CDU in Thuringia into the hot phase of state election preparation. Observers also see the party conference as a signal to potential coalition partners and to the federal party that the state party stands behind its leadership.

At a press conference following the vote, Voigt announced that he would continue to deal openly with the allegations and respect the ongoing university review. At the same time, he wanted to focus on the work of government and swiftly implement the resolutions of the party conference. The next state-level political initiatives, including an energy package and an administrative reform, are to be presented in the coming weeks.
