Marterbauer has defended the presented double budget against criticism from the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB), the FPÖ, the Greens and the Federation of Industries (IV), and reaffirmed his goal of reducing the budget deficit to the permitted three percent of GDP by 2028.
Marterbauer expressed confidence that the presented budget would suffice to reduce the budget deficit to the permitted three percent of gross domestic product by 2028. Consolidation would focus primarily on revenue-side measures, as these would dampen consumption less and be preferable from a distributional perspective.
The Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB), however, takes the view that the planned consolidation measures will not be sufficient to achieve the deficit target. Marterbauer attributed the central bank's more pessimistic assessment, among other things, to differences in estimating the future EU contribution as well as to statistical effects, and partly to differing assessments regarding transfers to states and municipalities.
