Kylian Mbappé broke Lionel Messi's record in the third-place match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and now stands alone at the top of the all-time World Cup scoring list with 22 goals.

The decisive goal came in the 66th minute, when Mbappé scored to make it 3:4 for France against England – his second goal in the match, after he had already pulled one back in the 47th minute to make it 1:4. France ultimately lost the encounter in Florida 4:6, but for the Frenchman's personal tally the evening was of historic significance.

The Moment of the Record

With these two goals, Mbappé overtook Lionel Messi, who had previously led with 21 World Cup goals, and moved to the top of the all-time scoring list. Before that, Miroslav Klose had held the record with 16 goals, before Messi had caught up in recent years. Mbappé needed 22 World Cup appearances for his 22 tournament goals.
