Some 17,000 young people sat the medical admissions test (MedAT) in Austria on Friday to secure one of the 1,950 available places, according to data published before the exam, while statistics reveal a strong overrepresentation of children of doctors and university graduates in this field.

The figures, drawn notably from the 2025 Student Social Survey (Studierendensozialerhebung) of the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS), show that 58% of students at Austrian medical universities have at least one parent holding a university degree, compared with 45% on average across all higher education institutions (universities, universities of applied sciences, teacher training colleges and private universities).
