Scientists have repeatedly warned that these conditions can release sudden torrents of water and debris when lakes dammed by moraines burst or when steep slopes collapse.

A spiritual organization based in the United States said that 22 Americans associated with it were unaccounted for in the aftermath of the flooding. The group did not immediately provide further details on the identities of those missing, and consular officials were working to confirm their whereabouts.

Climate link and warnings

Climate researchers stress that planet-heating emissions from burning fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal are the primary driver of climate change, and that the Himalayan region is warming faster than the global average. They argue that the accelerating melt of glaciers raises the likelihood of so-called glacial lake outburst floods, which can arrive with little warning.
