Search continues for more than 1,500 people missing after Nepal-Tibet border floods

At least 1,500 people remained unaccounted for as of 28 August, according to figures released by Nepal's disaster management agency. Most of the missing were from Nuwakot district and the adjoining Rasuwa area, where entire hamlets were swept away or buried under landslide debris. Families gathered at relief camps in Kathmandu and surrounding towns, awaiting word on relatives who had been living near the riverbanks when the waters rose.

Glacier avalanche triggered the surge

Saswata Sanyal, a disaster risk reduction specialist at a climate research group, told reporters that the Lhende Khola had flooded twice in fourteen months. "The Lhende Khola has flooded twice in fourteen months, this time triggered by an ice rock avalanche from a glacier on the Nepal side that blocked the river and released a sudden surge downstream," Sanyal said, describing how the temporary ice dam gave way and released a torrent into the Trishuli system.

The event underscored growing concern among climate scientists about glacial lake outbursts and ice-rock avalanches in the Himalayan watershed, phenomena that have become more frequent as mountain ice retreats. Sanyal's team said the second flood in just over a year suggested that risk-mitigation infrastructure in the basin was insufficient. Local officials acknowledged that early-warning sirens existed in some districts but that the speed of the surge had outpaced evacuation plans.

Regional response and aid

India joined the relief effort by sending medical supplies and search personnel through the border crossings used after previous Himalayan disasters. New Delhi's external affairs ministry said the assistance was offered on humanitarian grounds and was coordinated with Kathmandu. The gesture came amid broader regional cooperation on disaster response, which analysts said had improved since a series of deadly Himalayan floods in recent years.

Survivors described scenes of sudden destruction. In one Nuwakot village, residents said they had only minutes to climb to higher ground before a wall of water and debris swept through the valley. Volunteers from the Nepal Red Cross distributed tarpaulins, food packets and drinking water at temporary shelters, while engineers from the army worked to restore footbridges cut by the flood.

Search effort and missing-persons toll

Officials warned that the missing-persons figure could shift as communication with remote villages was re-established and as families registered relatives. Nepal's home ministry said it had set up a dedicated help-line and was cross-checking names with village heads. The Trishuli River remained swollen but had begun to recede in the lower reaches, allowing some displaced residents to return and inspect what was left of their homes.

The long-term challenge for both governments will be reconstruction and the resettlement of households whose land has been rendered uninhabitable. Nepal's planning commission said initial estimates of damage to housing, road infrastructure and agricultural land were still being compiled, but that international aid would be required to fund rebuilding. Climate researchers, including Sanyal, urged authorities to treat the disaster as a warning that warming temperatures are altering the behaviour of Himalayan glaciers and the rivers they feed.
