Berlin, November 2, 2026

Friedrich Merz announced in Berlin on Monday that he wants to propose a joint candidate from the political center to the CDU for the upcoming election of the federal president.

The non-public CDU conference of district chairpersons took place in Berlin. According to the news agencies dpa and Reuters, Merz said there that the party should unite behind a joint candidate. He did not name anyone in the statement distributed through the agencies.

The candidate should, from Merz’s perspective, come from the political center. This describes not only the political expectations for the person, but also the CDU’s aim to unite around the joint proposal within the party and toward voters.
