Berlin, October 29, 2026

The CDU leadership opposed committing its support for Ilse Aigner before reaching an agreement with the CSU and SPD in Berlin on October 29, 2026.

Following a media report, the CDU leadership is resisting a commitment to Ilse Aigner as a possible candidate for the office of Federal President. It therefore remains unclear whom the three parliamentary factions intend to agree on as the successor to Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

The actual decision will be made by the Federal Assembly, where the CDU, CSU, and SPD together hold the majority. According to the report, it is therefore very likely that the person nominated by Friedrich Merz will also receive the majority’s support.

Why the Federal Assembly decides

Political scientist Münch explained: "The three parties basically have to agree on a person who can be represented in all three parties." In her assessment, this therefore requires a jointly acceptable female or male candidate.
