In the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina on Sunday, Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal face each other – 19 years after a photo of the two of them in a plastic tub was taken for a Unicef calendar.
The final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off on Sunday at 21:00 CEST in East Rutherford, near New York. The tournament, hosted across the USA, Canada, and Mexico, reaches its climax with the duel between Spain and Argentina. In Germany, ZDF and MagentaTV will broadcast the match live; in Austria, ORF 1 will air it.
The special nature of the encounter stems from the shared backstory of its two protagonists. In December 2007, when Lionel Messi was 20 years old, he took part in a photoshoot for a Unicef calendar that had been organized by a Spanish sports newspaper. FC Barcelona players posed with children who had been selected by lottery. One of those children was Lamine Yamal, then just a few months old.
