Arlington, July 14, 2026
In the first semifinal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Spain and France will face each other on Tuesday at 9:00 PM (live on ZDF and ORF 1) in Arlington near Dallas.
Historic Meeting of the Top Four
It is the third consecutive semifinal between the two teams, and for the first time in the tournament's history, the four highest-ranked nations according to the FIFA rankings meet in the semifinals. Spain, Argentina, France, and England – measured by the world rankings, the "four best football nations in the world" are playing against each other, as formulated in the ZDF-sportstudio article. "Das hat es in der WM-Geschichte noch nie gegeben."
The format also contributed to producing this constellation. FIFA had introduced a seeding list for the knockout phase, "wie sie beispielsweise bei Tennisturnieren üblich ist." The winners of the groups in which the top four of the world rankings played ended up in different quarters of the tournament bracket. "Alle vier schafften es, ihre Gruppen zu gewinnen, so dass sie sich tatsächlich in der K.o.-Phase zunächst aus dem Weg gingen."
Tough Roads to the Semifinal
On the way to the semifinal, however, the favorites had to work to varying degrees. "Frankreich hatte Mühe mit Paraguay (1:0)," writes ZDF reporter Lukas Zahrer. Argentina needed extra time against Cape Verde (3:2), and England "drehte erst spät einen Rückstand gegen die DR Kongo (2:1)." The top four spared each other because "vermeintlich starke Nationen wie Deutschland, Brasilien und die Niederlande schon scheiterten, bevor sie überhaupt auf ein Top-Vier-Team treffen konnten."
