Meta has discontinued its AI image generation feature "Muse Image" four days after launch, while Sony has unveiled the RX10 V, the latest model in its superzoom bridge camera line.
Meta pulled the plug on "Muse Image," a feature of its AI chatbot that allowed users to generate images in the visual style of public Instagram accounts, after sharp criticism from the US actors' union SAG-AFTRA and several celebrities. The tool had been launched on Tuesday and was activated by default for users, a design choice that drew immediate fire. Meta announced the discontinuation on Friday, local time, just four days after the feature went live. "Wir haben das Feedback gehört, dass diese Funktion ihr Ziel verfehlt hat, daher ist sie nicht mehr verfügbar," a Meta spokesperson said.
The feature worked by analyzing public Instagram profiles to extract a creator's visual style. A user could prompt the system to, for example, "Erstelle ein Bild einer Katze im Central Park im Stil von @deinlieblingsinfluencer" and receive an image that appeared to have been made by that influencer. SAG-AFTRA criticized the automatic opt-in as "a complete misreading of public sentiment" and called on users to manually deactivate the tool. The union later welcomed Meta's decision to retire the feature.
