Vienna, April 20, 2026

Austria’s Transport Minister Peter Hanke (SPÖ) has announced a temporary "introductory offer" for the nationwide Climate Ticket, aimed at lowering barriers to public transit use.

Discounted Trial Period

The new promotion allows travelers to purchase a two-month trial of the Climate Ticket for 233 euros, or 175 euros at the reduced rate. This marks a significant discount compared to the annual cost of 1,400 euros (1,050 euros reduced). The initiative, described by Hanke as a way to "reduce the hurdles for public transport," targets potential users hesitant to commit to a full-year subscription.

Under standard terms, canceling the Climate Ticket before the seventh month incurs a fee equivalent to one month’s payment (currently 116.67 euros). The trial period eliminates this risk, offering flexibility for new subscribers.

Broader Adoption Goals

The Climate Ticket, which grants unlimited access to Austria’s public transit network, currently has 290,000 paying customers. Including regional variants, approximately 1.7 million people hold some form of the pass. The ministry hopes the trial will expand this figure by appealing to those who previously found the annual cost prohibitive.
