Mörbisch Lake Festival Brings "Mamma Mia!" Back as a New Production in 2027

State Governor Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ) announced on Wednesday that the musical would come "allerdings nicht als bloße Wiederaufnahme, sondern als völlig neue Produktion." The set design and costumes will be created anew, and the cast is also to be almost entirely different. With a new set design, new costumes, and a largely new cast, the festival aims to build on the success of 2023, which drew more than 183,000 visitors.

According to the information provided, the changed visual impression is intended to ensure that visitors who were already at "Dancing Queen" in 2023 will come back to Mörbisch. For 2027, Haider announced that he would draw lessons from the first production and improve or change certain things.

2026 Program: La Cage aux Folles

Haider explained: "Darüber hinaus wollen wir all jenen Gelegenheit geben, eines der erfolgreichsten Musicals überhaupt bei uns zu sehen, denen wir 2023 absagen mussten, da wir gänzlich ausverkauft waren." He estimated that around 20,000 additional tickets could have been sold at the time.

His goal is an "Erlebnis voller Lebensfreude, Glückseligkeit und Emotionen." Twenty-two performances are planned for August 2027; additional dates are possible, Doskozil noted. Ticket pre-sales will begin on the 17th.

In the current 2026 season, meanwhile, a different piece is on the festival's program. This summer, "La Cage aux Folles" is being staged in Mörbisch. Tickets are still available for all 19 planned performances (through the 22nd).

Tradition and Success on Lake Neusiedl

The Mörbisch Lake Festival is one of Austria's most tradition-rich open-air stages. With the return of "Mamma Mia!" as an ABBA musical, the organizers are banking on a crowd puller that already produced record figures in 2023.

The organizers are combining the new staging with the aspiration of presenting the legendary songs of the Swedish band ABBA in a new visual framework. The lakeside stage on Lake Neusiedl offers one of the largest open-air settings in Europe for this purpose each year.

Given the positive experiences from 2023, the organizers expect similarly strong demand. The combination of well-known hits and a new production is intended to appeal both to returning visitors and to new audiences.
