The musical "La Cage aux Folles – Ein Käfig voller Narren" celebrated its premiere at the Mörbisch Lake Festival on Lake Neusiedl and brought the audience to a standing ovation.
This season, the Mörbisch Lake Festival presents the musical "La Cage aux Folles" in an elaborate staging on the lakeside stage. The production is directed by Andreas Gergen, who has served as artistic director of the Bühne Baden since 2025. The piece is based on the play of the same name by Jean Poiret from 1973, which was adapted into a film in 1978 starring Michel Serrault and Ugo Tognazzi. The songs come from composer Jerry Herman, including the world-famous hit "I Am What I Am".
At the center of the plot is Albin, called Zaza, a master of travesty and star of a nightclub in Saint-Tropez. He has lived as a couple for over 20 years with his partner Georges, the owner of the establishment. The book for the Broadway version, which premiered in 1983 and won six Tony Awards, was written by Harvey Fierstein. The German version for Mörbisch was translated by Erika Gesell and Christian Severin.
