Volkswagen subsidiary Moia has launched public rides in self-driving minibuses in Hamburg, initially offering the service to selected pre-registered users via the Moia app.
Funding and project framework
The new service is part of the ALIKE research and testing project, which is designed to run for 36 months and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport with 26 million euros. The funds cover vehicle operations, platform development, and scientific monitoring. The system is designed for SAE Level 4 automation and steers the vehicle autonomously within a defined operational domain.
Initially, Moia serves parts of the Winterhude, Barmbek, and Wandsbek districts. In total, the ALIKE service area covers around 37 square kilometers in central Hamburg. As the project progresses, additional barrier-free Holon Movers with capacity for up to 15 passengers are also set to be deployed. Moia plans to operate up to ten autonomous buses.
