More than a week after the flash flood in the Himalayas: Two people buried alive rescued in Nepal

The flash flood, triggered by heavy monsoon rains and an associated hydrological event in the Himalayas, devastated large parts of the region. According to preliminary figures from the Nepalese disaster management authority, the death toll rose to more than 1,000, while the number of missing persons continued to skyrocket. Severe flooding was also reported in neighboring Tibet; three German citizens were temporarily considered missing.

According to estimates by the Nepalese authorities, the damage caused by the floods amounts to at least 2.56 billion dollars, equivalent to around 2.20 billion euros. Infrastructure, residential buildings, and agricultural land along the river valleys are particularly affected. The government in Kathmandu is coordinating the aid measures together with international partners and aid organizations.

Search and rescue under extreme conditions

Rescue teams continue to comb through the mud and rubble, often with simple tools and under difficult conditions. The recovery of the two people who were buried is considered a rare sign of hope amid an otherwise devastating toll. Eyewitnesses report that the helpers are not giving up the search despite exhaustion.

In addition to acute emergency relief, there is growing concern about the outbreak of diseases. Standing water, a lack of sanitary facilities, and the enormous number of corpses are favoring the spread of infections. Aid organizations are warning of a possible second wave of crisis if drinking water, medicines, and vaccines do not reach the affected areas quickly enough.

Concern about diseases after the flood

According to correspondents in Beijing, reporting on the effects of the flash flood in neighboring Tibet is severely restricted. Information from Chinese sources was reportedly partially censored, making it difficult for the international community to assess the true extent of the disaster. China has so far not officially commented in full on the damage on its side of the Himalayas.

The Nepalese government has requested international aid. Several countries and organizations have already pledged financial support as well as search and rescue teams. The distribution of relief supplies, however, poses enormous logistical challenges for the authorities in view of destroyed roads and bridges.

International aid and reconstruction

Parallel to the rescue operations, initial investigations into the causes and the exact course of the flash flood are underway. Experts point out that such extreme events in the Himalayas could occur more frequently in the future in the course of climate change. The findings are to be incorporated into revised early warning systems.

For the survivors, the arduous reconstruction is meanwhile beginning. Many families have lost relatives, homes, and livelihoods. Local initiatives are organizing emergency shelters, food, and initial psychological support, while national authorities are preparing a reconstruction fund.

According to the assessment of aid workers, the rescue of the two people who were buried shows that even after a week, hope cannot be ruled out. The search operations will continue as long as the emergency services see a realistic chance of finding more survivors.

International attention is also increasingly turning to the region. Media worldwide are reporting on the scale of the disaster, including about a single green house that withstood the flood unscathed and became an internet sensation. Such images illustrate the force, but also the unpredictability of the masses of water.
