The woman had already come to attention in 2018. As court documents show, she killed her then eight-month-old son in 2018. The files state verbatim: „2018 habe sie ihren damals acht Monate alten Sohn getötet und sei wegen des Anlassdelikts des Mordes in eine Anstalt für geistig abnorme Rechtsbrecher (heute: forensisch-therapeutisches Zentrum) eingewiesen worden".

The case thus raises questions about the background of the committal. The facilities now known as forensic-therapeutic centers take in persons in Austria who have been convicted or charged with serious crimes but whose criminal responsibility was deemed diminished or absent at the time of the offense. Decisions on the length of stay, leave, or relaxations are generally made by a court based on expert reports.

Investigation and Wels Correctional Facility

The Wels Public Prosecutor's Office is now conducting the investigation against the suspect. The authorities did not initially comment conclusively on the circumstances under which the woman was able to access the child and a knife, or on possible shortcomings in the forensic care.

The incident was reported on by, among others, the Kronen Zeitung. Several domestic media picked up the report on Thursday and referred to the ongoing investigation. Police had stopped the scheduled bus after the attack and secured the crime scene.

Reactions and the affected community

Bad Goisern is located in the inner Salzkammergut and belongs to the district of Gmunden. The region is regularly served by scheduled public transport buses. The incident has caused considerable concern in the small community, especially as a child is affected.

Legal classification of the case

Legally, the case is complex: if the suspicion of attempted murder is confirmed, the prior history of placement in a forensic-therapeutic center will also be relevant to the further proceedings. Experts must then assess both the suspect's criminal responsibility at present and possible links to the earlier offense.

The investigators announced further interrogations and the evaluation of video footage from the bus in the coming days. Whether and when the suspect would be brought before the remand judge was still undecided on Thursday.
