MT Melsungen Wins First Major Title with Last-Second European League Victory Over THW Kiel

Mandic had already given Melsungen a 13-12 halftime lead with a goal in the last second of the first half. The second period continued in the same tense fashion, with neither side able to pull away decisively.

Aaron Mensing put Melsungen ahead 17-15 in the 40th minute, but Kiel responded immediately through Eric Johansson and Harald Reinkind to level the score. The pattern of thrust and counter-thrust defined the remainder of the match.

Parrondo's Timeout Sets Up the Winner

Melsungen head coach Roberto Garcia Parrondo called a timeout with 37 seconds left and the score tied at 23-23. He used the break to instruct his players for the decisive attacking move.

The plan worked perfectly. After a diagonal pass from Dainis Kristopans, Mandic found the net to secure the historic victory. Goalkeeper Simic had earlier saved a penalty from Zerbe with two minutes remaining, a moment that proved just as vital.

Melsungen had reached the final by overpowering defending champion SG Flensburg-Handewitt 37-30 in the semifinal on Saturday. The halftime score in that match was 15-14, but Melsungen pulled away convincingly in the second half.

Road to the Title

Flensburg recovered from that defeat to win the third-place match 32-30 against French side Montpellier HB, who had lost their semifinal to THW Kiel. The victory earned the Schleswig-Holstein club a prize of 50,000 euros.

For MT Melsungen, the triumph marks a milestone in the club's history. Never before had the team from North Hesse won a major title, and the European League crown now opens the possibility of qualifying for the Champions League.

Historic Achievement for North Hesse Club

The match statistics underlined how closely contested the final was. Melsungen never led by more than two goals, and Kiel's Swedish backcourt shooter Johansson managed a shooting percentage of only 33 percent before halftime, contributing to the favorites' struggles.

THW Kiel goalkeeper Andreas Wolff made just one save in the first 21 minutes, prompting coach Filip Jicha to replace him with Spanish international Gonzalo Perez de Vargas when the score was 10-10.
