Trump dismisses Republican critics

Committee math tightens

Beyond the Judiciary Committee, the broader Senate math is also delicate. Republicans hold a working majority in the chamber, and any defections on the floor could force leadership to rely on a narrow coalition if Democrats uniformly oppose Blanche.

The White House has signaled that it intends to push ahead with the nomination. Trump, who was asked about the criticism from within his own caucus, framed the resistance in personal terms, citing the previous impeachment vote as a reason he would not actively campaign on behalf of dissenters.

Murkowski's pattern of independence

Murkowski has historically been willing to break with her party on high-profile nominations and judicial confirmations. Her current stance tracks with that pattern and reflects the unsettled politics surrounding the Justice Department at the start of the new administration.

Separately on Thursday, Trump said he was signing two executive actions on immigration: one limiting the number of people eligible for U.S. citizenship after being born in the United States and the other focused on stopping people from coming to the U.S. to give birth. The two orders were not directly tied to Blanche's nomination but were announced the same day.

The Blanche nomination now joins a list of Trump administration picks that have faced intra-party friction in the Senate. Republican leaders have not indicated whether they intend to renegotiate the nomination or press forward with a vote despite the visible cracks in support.
